This is from a dad.

Alberta has cut about $700,000 a year out of its $13 Billion health budget by eliminating funding for sex change surgery for individuals having gender dysphoria. This is not cosmetic surgery - it is often the only way an individual with gender dysphoria can cope and survive. Many of these individuals commit suicide, and every one of them is someone's child, parent, spouse or friend. Many of them were counting on their surgery going ahead, but now that won't happen.

So, we most definitely will have some suicides. but hey, those are cheap - dead transsexuals don't incur medical costs. Oh, wait, what if the attempt fails? You can bet not all the attempts will succeed, and we will have some hospital and medical costs there, but hopefully less than $700,000. We will definitely have a very expensive human rights challenge that will cost Alberta an awful lot more than $700,000, and that's a challenge that Alberta will lose. Preston Manning once remarked on the difference between a soft head and a soft heart. Here, we have a perfect example of soft heads and hard hearts. Alberta will save a few hundred thousand now to kick a few people while they're down, so who cares if we end up losing money (and face) on it later? This should play well with the Christian right - who really should be asking themselves: "What would Jesus do?" I think you know the answer.
Shame on Alberta. Shame on the politicians who will be directly responsible for deaths that could have been prevented. Maybe they can borrow a towel from Pontius Pilate? Tomorrow is Good Friday after all.
